Bună ziua! Ma numesc Chati, şi sunt din statele unite. Îmi place învat romana, dar inţeleg puţin.
Mulţumesc for the site, it's very helpful along my journey of learning Romanian. I went on a mission trip near Baia Mare this summer and I'm going back in November, this time I want to be able to communicate at least a little in the native language. Thanks again for the site!

Eu sunt ReachingOut. Sunt din Anglia, dar locuiesc în Grecia de 14 ani. Învăț română pentru că am multe prieteni din Romania cu care vorbesc în română. Am fost în România împreună cu prietenii mei și am petrecut foarte bine acolo, aș mai vrea să călătoresc acolo ca să văd mai mult din țară și când o să am ocazia o să merg. Învăț română de 3 ani aproximativ. Nu vorbesc perfect, dar încet-încet fac progres 
I'm ReachingOut. I'm from England, but have lived in Greece for 14 years. I'm learning Romanian because I have a lot of friends with whom I speak in Romanian. I went to Romania with my friends and had a great time there, I would like to travel there again to see more of the country and when I get the chance I'll go. I've been learning Romanian for about 3 years. I don't speak perfectly, but I'm slowly making progress!

Ma numesc Lee, şi vorbesc puţin de lîmba româna. Locuiesc în Arizona, în Statele Unite.
Vorbesc româneşte acum tre şi patru ani. Este o lîimbă foarte simplu de aprinde, şi îmi place mult a vorbi şi a invata-lo.

Salut!
Ma numesc Kevin, şi nu vorbesc sau scrie bine româneşte. I am learning Romanian for two reasons, both related to becoming engaged with my Romanian girlfriend:
1. I would like to speak her native language in case we move.
2. Her father and mother speak little English and I need to ask permission.
I've found help in the first magazine produced and hopefully after studying and practicing I will learn more. I have a hard time with declension and case, since I have been overly familiar for years with the simplification of english into subjective, objective, possessive. My mind is proving resistant to rapid change.
I spent weeks with tutorial software (Byki, Pimleur) and these have made me able to say hello, goodbye, i'm sorry, and even decipher the above persons statement that they've been speaking for four years? But that's as far as my tricks take me. Besides learning, I am also seeking assistance in penning a letter but every time I try to write I mess the grammar up greatly.

Eu sunt Chati si am fost in Romania trei saptamanii in noiembrie, aproape la Baia Mare. Acolo invat mai cuvinte in limba romana iar imi place timp cu prietenii mei foarte mult! Eu vorbesc romana doar de la august dar imi place! Fain site!

It is great to see how much one can progress and learn in half a year. You speak good Romanian already.
Let me just correct a little bit your post (though your text is perfectly understandable).
“aproape de Baia Mare” – close to Baia Mare
“mai cuvinte” -> you probably meant “mai multe cuvinte”. “more” in Romanian is “mai mulţi / multe”. When used with another adjective (like more beautiful), then we use “mai” + adj.: “mai frumos”
“imi place timp” – you probably meant “imi place să petrec timp” – I like to spend time
“din august” – from August
I am very impressed!

Hello all,
(I won't try to write in Romanian yet)
My name is Job and I'm from Utrecht, The Netherlands. I've only just begun to learn Romanian and my main motivation is that it's an important EU-language with a beautiful sound to boot.
After the first ten lessons of Pimsleur, I'm currently working my way through the French book “Le roumain sans peine” from Assimil. I also used the “sans peine”-method to learn Polish and I'm well pleased with it, notably because of its excellent audio. Next I intend to consolidate my basic command of the language with the Dutch textbook “Noroc!”. I would love to hear from you what books you can recommend. (Edit: but that belongs in a seperate topic, of course)

My name is Prescott. Started learning Romanian about 3 weeks ago using Pimsleur. Now I have a few questions and was very happy to find this site, as I do not like not having answers to my questions for very long. For example, to my ear, the word for “I understand” is pronounced two different ways on the audio recordings. One begins with what sounds like “un” (un-sa-leg) and the other begins with “en” or the english letter “n” (en-sa-leg). Perhaps I'm anal retentive, but it bothers me as I know in english, subtle changes like this can make a word completely different.
So I will ask simple questions as I have found that whenever I ask a question, no matter how simple, someone else wanted to ask but wouldn't.

Sorry to reply this late, have been away from the computer for a while.
As I don't know the exact phrases used in your course, this is just a guess: the difference in the pronounciation could come from the fact that the word înțeleg (pronounced approx in English: un-tse-leg) is starting with letter î. In some cases when the preceeding word is ending in a vowel, the î would not be pronounced, and you'd hear the word starting with the ending vowel of the preceeding word. Here is an example when the preceeding vowel is u:
Normally: Nu vorbesc și nu înțeleg românește. [... nu un-tse-leg ...]
Contracted: Nu vorbesc și nu-nțeleg românește. [... noon-tse-leg ...]
Now, this can happen with other vowels too: a, ă, o, etc.: să-nțeleg, o-nțeleg, and so on.

It is very difficult to recommend books, as I have not studied to many of those myself. I could recommend though some available in Romania:

- this site provides a Learn Romanian CD, but I have not test it, so I cannot really say how good it is: http://www.dictionare.com/. It also have a lot of useful stuff.

I started to learn Romanian past few weeks, listening to your podcasts. I also have a Romanian colleague who teaches me some vocabulary and gives me an opportunity to practice romanian at my work.
I have been 4 times on holiday in Romania. Imi plac foarte mult.
